The Sound of Picture Books
Since its inception in 2014, The sound of Picture BooksTM has been performed annually in Western Australia through The Literature Centre in partnership with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and Yamaha, and internationally at the Hong Kong International Literary Festival and in South Korea. It has also been performed at the Perth Arts Festival, Perth Fringe Festival and The Sydney Writers Festival.
Most recently it has been performed by the Perth Symphony Orchestra in Western Australia and the Michael Haydn Orchestra in Queensland.
To-date over 30,000 students have experienced The Sound of Picture BooksTM performances, witnessing the power of words/images/music to enhance wellbeing, the sharing of knowledge, and experiencing a lateral thinking and unorthodox approaches to creativity.
The Founder
Matt Ottley is the founder of The Sound of Picture BooksTM and the co-director with Tina Wilson OAM. Matt has the neurological condition of synaesthesia where there is a cross-wiring of perceptions – for Matt when he hears sounds it illicit shapes and colours in his visual cortex. He has learnt to reverse engineer this condition to use it as a unique tool in his composition of music from images.
